Garden Planning

February is a special month that requires planning to guarantee a successful year in the garden. Ensuring a bountiful garden requires preparation. The Valentine month ranks as my favorite because it’s my birthday month! This means I can bribe my whole family into helping me right?

Gardening is something I can do with my family or on my own. Spending time in the soil provides time to wind down, gather my thoughts, and prepare for my week. However, it always nice to have the help! An important piece of the puzzle is knowing in which zone the garden lies. Mine is Zone 8. Zone 8a to be exact. Zones help gardeners determine what to plant and when to prepare.

Planning List

What we plant on our homestead in February?

  1. We plant things like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots. beets, turnips and other root veggies. Carrots, Beets, Turnips, and Cauliflower are veggies that only produce once. I stagger the planting so that my family can harvest continously. Broccoli will reproduce.
  2. I make sure to organize seeds to prepare for Spring planting. I start the following seedlings in my greenhouse  in February:
    1. Tomatoes
    2. Lettuce
    3. Kale
    4. Onions
    5. Peas
    6. Spinach
    7. Beans
  3. We prepare the beds
    1. Using either a compost I have been turning and preparing for the last 3-6 months
    2. Purchasing compost from a local supplier
      1. Garden Compost
      2. Mushroom Compost
  4. My family and I remove any and all dead debris from the beds
  5. We care for maintenance items:  hoses, bed borders, stone work and gates can be repaired during this month allowing for plenty of time to tend to plants through the busy months of Spring and Summer.
  6. We continue to harvest  broccoli, cauliflower, beets, carrots and turnips
  7. I Prepare and store what my family doesn’t eat.

Homesteading can be so rewarding mentally, physically and spiritually. More tips on composting coming in another Post.

I’ve wanted this Big Foot for my pond for 3 years. Gene finally made it happen for me!
Ecstatic is an under statement.

Rainy day isn’t stopping us! It’s the second weekend of March. You know what that means? Garden planting!
If you have followed me long, you know this is the weekend I plant. I don’t care what anyone says. I don’t care what the weather says. I don’t care what the farmers almanac says. This is what I say.

See when you are in tune with your garden, your zone and your plants, you know by the heart.
My squash plants get bountiful fruit before those nasty bugs.
The rain yields beautiful crops.
And even if we were to get a late freeze, it’s Texas. It won’t stay long enough to hurt your plants.

Can’t wait to garden with yall again this spring and summer. 🤍🥕🌽🥬🍅

Life. It sure does have a way of humbling people. A way of showing who matters. Who truly cares and supports. What is a priority and what isn’t.
Life seems so long when you’re young.
Short when you get old.
The nails, Diet Coke and weekend plans seem so fun.
Then it’s peace. Peace is fun.

This man and I have seen some life. Before each other and together. What was important to us 13 years ago and what’s important now are worlds apart.

But one thing remains the same, we are important to each other. 🩵
47 is off to a great start. I’ve been spring cleaning. My house and my life.
One day I just looked up and was like “what’s not serving my home, my family or me”.

We think 50 is half way but it’s not. Average lifespan is 72-73. That makes 36 half way!!
So by 47, I got to a place that said, I refuse to waste any more time.

I spent my 20&30s raising babies. I feel like I did an amazing job. I built businesses that have supported me and my family. I found the one who my soul loves.
I have gone through more than most in a lifetime. I have been to hell and back on more than one occasion.

Now, this chapter is about peace, happiness., Contentment and what the future holds.

I refuse to spend any more time on other people’s problems, petty drama, or unrest.
Bless and release is my new mottto.

I have cleaned out rooms, cabinets, clothes, drawers, decor, the yard and my heart and mind.

I’m focusing on Jesus first, my husband, my children, my business and the people who walk along side me. Feels amazing! ✝️
